What is Mizuna?

Mizuna is an Asian green. This member of the Brassica Rapa family grows extremely well during the winter months, in the Roanoke area. It has a higher nutritional value than lettuce and is an excellent source of Vitamin C.

There are several varieties of this leafy vegetable. Here at the Professor’s Garden we grow four different types.  Our green Mizuna has a mild almost sweet taste and is excellent fresh, by itself or in a mixed salad. It adds an interesting flavor to chicken soup and stir-fried meals. We use Ruby Streaks, a more piquant variety, as a pizza topping.

Both varieties will be available tomorrow, Tuesday, at the West End Community Market which is open 3 pm until 6 pm.
